A half-plate daguerreotype of Solomon Weathersbee Downs, a Louisiana politician who later served in the United States Senate, shows him turned three-quarters to the left. The plate was made in Mathew Brady's studio sometime between 1844 and 1849, and its sitter was identified by comparison with an engraving by T. Doney in *The United States Magazine and Democratic Review* from June 1849. Gold toning, applied to many plates of the era, deepened the image's tones and helped protect its delicate silver surface. The angled pose was a common choice for portraits of the period.
