Seated with one arm resting on a draped table, Sarah Allister McAllister Grant appears in this stereoscopic daguerreotype, a pair of nearly identical images meant to be viewed together for a three-dimensional effect. The plate is hand-colored, with pigment applied over the silver surface, a common finish in the 1850s when sitters wanted their portraits to look more lifelike. Dated tentatively to about 1853, the portrait is identified by a name written on its back, and it was acquired in 1997 as part of the Marian S. Carson collection.
