Henrietta Phillips McAllister, wife of Wardale G. McAllister, sits in an ornate chair with one arm resting on a table covered by a cloth. The picture is a stereoscopic daguerreotype, made with a camera that captured two slightly different views. When placed in a stereoscope, the pair merged into a single three-dimensional image. Its hand coloring, added over the silvery plate, was common in the 1850s and softened tones in the face and clothing. The date, May 18, 1855, is written on the back.
