A stereoscopic daguerreotype from April 24, 1854, shows a man seated in three-quarter length, his arm resting on a draped table. Stereo pairs like this were made to be viewed through a hand-held viewer, which fused two slightly offset images into a single three-dimensional scene. Daguerreotypes of this period were unique positives on silvered copper, so each plate is an original rather than a copy, and the inscription on the back dates it to that day. The sitter remains unidentified, but the pose and props reflect the conventions of mid-1850s studio portraiture.
