Stereoscopic daguerreotypes like this one were made as paired images, meant to be viewed through a hand viewer for a three-dimensional effect. John and Fanny Stevenson sit side by side at a draped table, arms resting on the cloth, with touches of color added by hand. The record identifies the man as John M. McAllister Stevenson (1819-1872) and suggests that Fanny may be Frances Wardale Stevenson, his sister. A label on the back names John McAllister of Media, Pennsylvania, and hand-coloring of daguerreotypes was a common finish in the 1850s, when studios aimed to make these silver-surfaced plates look more lifelike.
