A full-length seated portrait of William Young McAllister (1812–1896) stands out on this board, with his arm resting on a draped table. Stereoscopic daguerreotypes like this one were made as two nearly identical views that, seen through a stereoscope, merged into a single image with apparent depth. This example has been hand-colored, a finish that added tints to cheeks and clothing on the silvered copper plate. McAllister's name is inscribed on the back, which helps tie the plate to its sitter. Pairs like this were popular as parlor entertainment and as keepsakes of family and friends during the 1850s.
