Mrs. William Y. McAllister sits at a draped table, her arm resting on the cloth, in a stereoscopic daguerreotype whose hand-applied color is still visible. Her husband, William Young McAllister, lived from 1812 to 1896, and the Library of Congress catalogs the plate under the family subject heading. Stereoscopic pairs like this were made with two lenses so that, viewed through a stereoscope, the two slightly different images fused into a single three-dimensional scene. Hand-coloring, often added to cheeks, lips and clothing, was a common way to make these mirror-bright silver plates look more lifelike.
