Little is recorded about the two sitters, an unidentified man and boy, but the brass mat is stamped "J. P. Ball, Cincinnati," which ties this plate to a studio in that river city. Cincinnati was one of the busiest centers of daguerreotype work in the 1850s, and portraits like this were often sold in decorative cases to families who wanted a lasting likeness of a father and child. The hand coloring, which adds tints to cheeks and clothing over the silver image, was an extra expense that made the picture look closer to a painted miniature.
