Clara Bow, the silent-screen actress often called the "It Girl," is the sitter in this 1929 head-and-shoulders portrait, shown turned to the right in the studio style of the day. The print comes from Underwood & Underwood, a Washington firm that produced large numbers of publicity and studio portraits of film stars and public figures during the 1920s. Bow's popularity peaked in the mid-1920s, and by 1929, the year her first talking picture appeared, portraits like this one helped keep her image before the public as Hollywood moved toward sound. Its catalog-style title, "Hollywood beauties," reflects how such photographs were marketed.
