Taken in 1931 by the Washington studio of Underwood & Underwood, this camera study shows John J. Raskob, a General Motors executive who was then chairing the Democratic National Committee. Raskob was also a prominent backer of the Empire State Building in New York, a project that made him a well-known figure in business circles. Underwood & Underwood was a major photography firm that supplied portraits and news pictures to newspapers and magazines, so the picture reflects the polished, deliberate portrait style of the period, when a man's public image was closely managed during the Depression.
