Rising above the narrow streets of Siena, the tower of La Mangia is the subject here, a 14th-century landmark that marks the Palazzo Pubblico in the city's central piazza. Its name is commonly traced to a bell ringer nicknamed "Mangiaguadagni." American printmaker John Taylor Arms made this etching in 1927 as part of a series of Italian views, a body of work that drew on the architecture of Italian towns. Arms is known for precise line work, and here he shows the tower against the tight, shadowed streets around it.
