The title, "A little more grape, Captain Bragg," refers to a line popularly attributed to Gen. Zachary Taylor during the Battle of Buena Vista, fought near Saltillo on February 22 and 23, 1847. Capt. Braxton Bragg commanded an artillery battery that helped hold the American line against Santa Anna's larger army, and the exchange became one of the best-known anecdotes of the Mexican-American War. Nathaniel Currier issued this lithograph in New York that same year, with the scene drawn by Cameron. Historians treat the exact words with caution, but the print shows how quickly battlefield stories reached popular imagery.
