Nathaniel Currier's lithograph "Look at Papa" shows a domestic scene of the kind his firm sold in large numbers in the mid-19th century, when the shop at 2 Spruce Street in New York produced inexpensive prints for middle-class American homes. The record dates the print to between 1838 and 1856, and it is catalogued in the Conningham raisonné of Currier & Ives work, where a second version carries a differently set publisher line and a number printed beneath it. Its subject, a mother and children, reflects the family-centered sentiment that made such genre pictures popular, and the hand coloring applied to each impression was often done by workers who finished prints in batches.
