Flies, not fishing or haymaking, are the source of trouble in this Currier & Ives lithograph, whose title promises a relaxed country holiday while its subjects are misbehaving children in a barn. The New York firm produced thousands of comic genre scenes like this one during the 1860s, when city families increasingly spent summers in the countryside. Humor of this kind played on the gap between urban expectations of rural calm and the noisy, messy reality of farm life. Dated to about 1868, the print belongs to the middle of that run of inexpensive comic lithographs, which many households displayed on their walls.
