Judas, not a saint or a statesman, is the figure at the center of this scene: a effigy of the betrayer is set alight on Holy Saturday, a custom in Brazil's Catholic celebrations that Debret, who lived in Brazil from 1816 to 1831, recorded with care. The print is a lithograph from the third volume of his *Voyage pittoresque et historique au Brésil*, published in Paris by Firmin Didot Frères between 1834 and 1839. Debret's book was among the most detailed visual records of daily and public life in Rio de Janeiro in those years, and this plate shows how a religious observance could also draw a crowd and become a street spectacle.
