This engraving pairs St. Peter's Basilica with the Vatican, the papal complex that sits beside it in Rome. The drawing is credited to H. Abbot and the engraving to J.B. Neagle, and the record dates it only to between 1840 and 1870. Views like this were widely reproduced in that period for books, travel accounts and parlor collections, when many middle-class buyers could not visit Rome in person. The basilica's great dome, completed in the late 16th century after designs associated with Michelangelo, is the element most viewers would expect to dominate such a view.
