Lakewood Cemetery's chapel in Minneapolis is the focus here, a stone building set among the cemetery's landscaped grounds, and the subject list's emphasis on masonry points to the stonework as much as the architecture. Lakewood opened in 1871 as one of the region's garden cemeteries, laid out on the model of the rural cemetery movement that spread through American cities in the nineteenth century. Around 1910, when this print was made, such chapels often served as places for small funeral services before burial. The print was issued by J. & R. Lamb of New York, a firm known for mass-produced view photographs sold to travelers and collectors.
