Here the Kremlin's red brick walls and towers rise above the Moscow River in the foreground, a view that puts the fortress's riverside face at the center of the frame. The Kremlin had served as the seat of Russian rulers for centuries, and after the Bolsheviks moved the capital back to Moscow in 1918, it became the home of the Soviet government. Photographs like this one, taken in 1934, show the complex at a time when the Soviet state was rebuilding Moscow and the Kremlin stood as its most recognizable symbol. The image comes from the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection, whose travel photographs document much of the world between the wars.
