The caption card ties this portrait to a man whose death set off one of the darkest episodes of the Soviet 1930s. That man was most likely Sergei Kirov, the Leningrad party chief shot dead inside the Smolny Institute on December 1, 1934. Joseph Stalin used the killing as a pretext for mass arrests and executions, and the purge soon reached old Bolshevik leaders, who were tried in Moscow beginning in 1936. The U.S. Information Agency, which operated from 1953 to 1999, issued this print, so it was made well after the events it refers to.
