A man carving a joint of meat while a woman sits opposite him anchors this 1905 title page, which Albert Robida engraved for an edition of Brillat-Savarin's aphorisms. Robida, a French illustrator known for his satirical and imaginative drawings, turns the book's theme of appetite and conversation into a domestic scene. Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, a lawyer and gastronome, published *The Physiology of Taste* in 1825, and his witty maxims on food and society remained popular long after his death in 1826. The engraving's staging of the meal as a social ritual suits that tradition.
