A Bengali-language cover of Nathaniel Hawthorne's *The Scarlet Letter* gives this item its particular interest. It shows a woman in a hood beside the letter A, the novel's central emblem of shame. Hawthorne published the book in 1850, a story of adultery and public humiliation set in seventeenth-century Puritan Boston, and it spread widely in translation. The caption card records no date, so the exact printing is uncertain. Still, seeing the American novel's images of sin and judgment rendered in Bengali script shows how far its themes traveled beyond New England.
