An elderly widow offers a young man a mug of pumpkin wine in this drawing, and the title frames it as the first step toward his downfall. The title borrows from William Hogarth's eighteenth-century series of engravings about a young heir's ruin in London, which made the "rake's progress" a familiar cautionary theme. Here the artist returns to that moral story and sets the temptation in an everyday domestic scene. The medium is India ink with gray wash on paper, a quick and flexible technique often used for illustration and satire.
