The caption makes the joke: the rake has swiftly acquired an unerring palate and dazzles his companions at the table. Published in May 1973, this ink drawing with gray wash and white highlights borrows the title and sequence of William Hogarth's 1735 engravings, which traced a young man's ruin through idleness and extravagance. The subjects of wine and parties make the satire plain, since the skill being admired is really a taste for drink that the later scenes would punish.
