Five pilots stand together beside an aircraft in this print from the Ira Clarence Eaker Collection, official Air Force photographs of Eaker and the men who served alongside him. Eaker rose through the Army's air arm between the wars and later commanded the Eighth Air Force in England, directing American bombing raids over Germany early in the Second World War. Group portraits like this were a common way for the young service to document its people and machines, though the record does not identify the pilots or the aircraft.
