Army Air Corps pilots Ira Eaker, on the left, and Muir Fairchild, on the right, appear together in this 1927 photograph tied to the Pan American Flight. That goodwill tour, flown by Army aircraft through Central and South America from late 1926 into 1927, was meant to show neighboring nations what American aviation could do. Eaker later commanded American bombers over Europe in World War II, and Fairchild became vice chief of staff of the newly independent U.S. Air Force.
