A small alabaster vase shaped like an amphora sets this picture apart: it still held a little oil that tomb robbers left behind in Tutankhamun's tomb. Howard Carter's team uncovered the tomb in the Valley of the Kings in 1922, and its contents drew worldwide attention through the 1920s. Jars like this one, used for oils and perfumes, offer a glimpse of daily and ceremonial life in ancient Egypt. The residue is also a reminder that the tomb had been entered in antiquity, long before the modern excavators arrived.
