A halftone from the December 19, 1912, issue of *Life* poses a playful question: why has Captain Kidd's treasure never been found? The magazine, then a humor weekly rather than the photo-driven publication it later became, used the pun-and-joke style typical of its pages. William Kidd was a Scottish privateer hanged in London in 1701 after being convicted of piracy, and legends of gold and jewels he buried along the American coast and Caribbean islands kept treasure hunters digging for centuries. By 1912 the stories were a familiar source of amusement and fantasy.
