Two drummer boys asleep on the ground, with a supper pot waiting over the fire, give this sketch its title, "A watched pot never boils," and its companion caption, "Played out." Edwin Forbes drew it in pencil as one of the field studies later gathered into *Life Studies of the Great Army*, published in 1876. Forbes was a Union army artist who sketched camp life from direct observation, recording the routines of soldiers rather than battle scenes. Drummer boys, often young teenagers, relayed signals for their regiments, and this image shows how worn out they could be between duties.
