Edwin Sandes appears in this engraving, credited to T. Sanders, a name that suggests the sheet was produced by a professional engraver rather than an amateur. The caption card gives his dates as 1559 to 1590, but the print itself is undated, so that span comes only from the card. The spelling "Sandes" is the card's; the churchman is more commonly written Sandys, who served as Bishop of Worcester and later as Archbishop of York during Elizabeth I's reign, a period of sharp debate over the shape of the Church of England. Portraits of clergymen like him were often engraved for books or sold as collectible sets, so this sheet likely belongs to that tradition.
