A member of the House of Oldenburg, Christian III ruled Denmark and Norway from 1534 until his death in 1559, and his reign brought the Lutheran Reformation to both kingdoms. This print reproduces a painting by Hyacinthe Rigaud, a French court portraitist born a century after the king died, so the likeness shows how a later artist imagined a Renaissance monarch rather than a sitting from life. The record gives no date for the print itself. Reproductions like this were often made to spread images of rulers through books and print collections.
