Made as an illustration for Victor J. Renner's 1883 book *Wien im Jahre 1683*, this engraving portrays John III Sobieski, the Polish king remembered above all for the relief of Vienna. In September 1683 his forces joined the Austrian and imperial armies in breaking the Ottoman siege of the city, and his cavalry's charge down from the Kahlenberg hills helped turn the battle. Because the engraving was made two centuries after those events, it reflects 19th-century interest in the siege rather than a likeness drawn from life. Sobieski ruled Poland-Lithuania from 1674 until his death in 1696.
