John Flaxman, the English sculptor and draftsman, is the subject of this engraving, which was made by R. Woodman from a portrait by John Jackson. Flaxman (1755-1826) is best known for his neoclassical sculpture and for his outline drawings illustrating Homer, Aeschylus and Dante, which were widely copied across Europe and America. The print follows the common practice of the period, when engraved likenesses of artists and writers circulated as frontispieces and in publications. The caption card carries no date, so the exact year of publication is not recorded here.
