A Quaker physician from Yorkshire who practiced in London, John Fothergill (1712-1780) is remembered for his medical work, his charity, and his botanical collecting. This photographic reproduction, made around 1913 by the Detroit Publishing Company, copies a painting by Gilbert Stuart, the American portraitist who worked in London in the 1770s and 1780s. Detroit Publishing made many such reproductions of paintings and views for sale to the public in the early twentieth century, so the print records a painting that was itself widely admired and circulated. The caption information in the record is unverified, so the dating and attribution should be read with that in mind.
