Sidney Godolphin, later Earl of Godolphin, served as Lord High Treasurer under Queen Anne and was among the most powerful ministers of his day. He managed the government's finances during the War of the Spanish Succession, working closely with the Duke of Marlborough. The engraving is credited to Phillibrown and is noted as possibly based on a painting by Godfrey Kneller, the leading portrait painter of the period, though the catalog marks that attribution as unverified. The card gives no date, so the year the print was made is unknown.
