A portrait of Louis de Duras, second Earl of Feversham, is the subject here, and it belongs to a soldier born in France who became a senior commander in England. He was a nephew of the French marshal Turenne and served Charles II, and in 1685 he led the royal army that defeated the Duke of Monmouth's rebellion at Sedgemoor. The caption card gives no date and only tentatively describes the process as mezzotint, and it also lists "Dogs," a tracing that may refer to a detail in the image but is not confirmed by the record.
