Pasteur's dates, 1822 to 1895, bracket the life of the French chemist and microbiologist shown here, though the record gives no date for the print itself. The card suggests a halftone reproduction, possibly of a painting, so the likeness has passed through both an artist's hand and a printing process. Halftone printing broke an image into dots that could be set alongside type, and it became common in books and newspapers in the late nineteenth century. Pasteur is known for pasteurization, for his work supporting germ theory, and for vaccines against anthrax and rabies, which made his face familiar to many readers outside the laboratory.
