A steel engraving of Ulysses S. Grant, the Union general who later served as the 18th president, is the subject here, produced by an engraver working under the name O'Neill in New York. The record carries no date, so the exact year of printing is unknown, but steel engravings of this kind were a popular way to circulate portraits of public figures in the nineteenth century, when they were reproduced in books, periodicals and parlor albums. Grant's wartime fame after the Civil War made him one of the most widely pictured men of his era, and portraits like this one helped spread his likeness across the country.
