Donald Grant Mitchell, the American essayist known by the pen name Ik Marvel, is the sitter in this steel engraving, a portrait format that was common for authors in the mid-nineteenth century. Mitchell wrote the popular sentimental sketches *Reveries of a Bachelor* (1850) and *Dream Life* (1851), and later spent years as a farmer and writer at his estate in New Haven, Connecticut. The record gives no date for the print, but steel engraving was the standard method for book frontispieces and magazine portraits of the period, so the image likely served that kind of literary audience. Its value lies in showing how American writers of that era presented themselves to their readers.
