Taken in Virginia City, Nevada, this photoprint of Ulysses S. Grant came from the local studio of Noe & Lee and is dated October 28, 1879. That places it during Grant's visit to the Comstock Lode mining district, a stop on his tour of the West after his trip around the world and his two terms as president from 1869 to 1877. Silver-mining towns like Virginia City drew many visitors then, and the portrait records a moment when the former president was a notable figure in the region. The date and studio credit come from an older caption card and have not been independently verified.
