This portrait shows Ulysses S. Grant, whose life span of 1822 to 1885 appears in the title, though the caption card records no date for the print itself. Grant commanded Union armies during the Civil War and then served as the 18th president from 1869 to 1877, a period dominated by Reconstruction in the South.
