Ulysses S. Grant, born in 1822 and died in 1885, is the subject here, though the caption card gives no date for the sitting. He rose from Civil War commander of the Union armies, accepting Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House in 1865, to serve as the 18th president from 1869 to 1877. Portraits of Grant were widely copied and sold during and after the war, so an image like this one reflects how the public came to know its general and president.
