Deborah Sampson, shown here presenting a letter to General George Washington, is the figure at the center of this engraving, though the title spells her name "Simpson" while the catalog tracings use "Sampson." Born in Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1760, she enlisted in the Continental Army in 1782 by posing as a man named Robert Shurtleff and served in the field until a fever led to the discovery of her sex and her discharge. Images like this one kept her story before the public in the decades after the war, when a woman soldier was an unusual subject. The caption card gives no date, so the print's year of publication is uncertain.
