The southeast corner of 16th and U Streets Northwest lies in the heart of the U Street corridor, which in the 1920s was a major center of Black-owned businesses, churches, and entertainment in the District. The National Photo Company, which photographed Washington streets extensively in the early twentieth century, made this view around 1924, and its caption card is tagged under the automobile industry, a sign of how quickly cars were changing city corners. Later, the neighborhood's theaters and nightclubs would earn it the nickname "Black Broadway.
