The corner of Ninth and F Streets Northwest is the subject here, and it sat at the edge of one of downtown Washington's most important federal blocks. The Patent Office, a large Greek Revival building, occupied the square between Seventh and Ninth Streets, so this intersection was part of a busy government district. Around 1890 the capital was growing quickly, with streetcar lines, foot and wagon traffic, and shops lining F Street. The record does not name a photographer, so the picture is best read as a view of everyday street life in that period.
