Lower Manhattan's Washington Square Arch, the marble triumphal arch at the foot of Fifth Avenue, is the subject of this c1930 photoprint by Irving Underhill, a New York photographer who issued views of city landmarks. The arch was designed by Stanford White and completed in 1892 as a temporary plaster structure, later rebuilt in marble in 1895, commemorating the centennial of George Washington's inauguration. Its meeting of the great avenue with the park's open plaza makes it a useful record of how the neighborhood looked in the years before the Depression reshaped its streets.
