Oil man Edward L. Doheny stands at the center of this 1930 photograph, taken as he faced a bribery charge in Washington, D.C. Prosecutors alleged that he had paid former Interior Secretary Albert B. Fall a large loan in exchange for leasing the Navy's Teapot Dome oil reserve to Doheny's company. The case was one of several that grew out of the Teapot Dome scandal, which exposed how government oil reserves had been handed to private firms in the early 1920s and made the courtroom a fixture of national news.
