Looking across the grounds of the U.S. Botanic Garden in Washington, this photograph places the Bartholdi Fountain in the distance, its cast-iron figures rising above the plantings. The fountain was designed by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, the French sculptor later known for the Statue of Liberty, and it was shown at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia before being installed near the Capitol. The print was made by Underwood & Underwood, a firm known for stereographs and mass-produced views of American sites. The record dates it to about 1930, but that date is unverified.
