A key print like this one is built around a key, the legend that identifies each figure by number or letter so viewers can read the group portrait. Here the sitters are George Washington and the officers who served under him during the Revolutionary War, shown together as a single composed group. The engraving by A.H. Ritchie dates to around 1870, when American printmakers were producing many such pictorial tributes to the Revolution, timed to the centennial mood of the era. Such keys let a viewer place each general by name, turning the sheet into a small lesson in who led the Continental Army.
