The title, *First in Peace*, borrows the phrase from Henry "Light-Horse Harry" Lee's 1799 funeral oration for George Washington, "first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen." This print presents Washington in a scene on the water, as the subject headings point to boats on New York waters in the 1780s, when New York City was the young nation's capital. Henry Brueckner painted the original, and John C. McRae engraved and published this version in New York around 1866. Because the record classifies it as a conjectural work, the scene is an imagined one, shaped by the artists' view of Washington's reputation rather than a documented event.
