Penn's first arrival in the colonies is the subject here, shown as a meeting between the Quaker proprietor and the settlers rather than a battle or a formal portrait. Howard Pyle, known for his historical illustrations, supplied the design, and the wood engraving appeared across two pages of *Harper's Weekly* in 1883. Penn reached the Delaware valley in 1682 to govern the land granted to him by Charles II, and the scene reflects the late-19th-century appetite for stories of colonial origins.
